Discrimination claim filed in Greenbelt against Maryland employer

On Behalf of | Jul 31, 2014 | Workplace Discrimination |

Here in Greenbelt, we are honored to be home to the U.S. District Court; one of two federal trial courts in Maryland. The courthouse is where documents were recently filed on behalf of a former employee of an area self-storage company.

The woman says the company unlawfully terminated her employment and unlawfully discriminated against her while she was managing two Waldorf storage facilities. According to news reports, she seeks compensation of $1 million.

Media reports note that the woman says in her lawsuit that by the end of her 16 years with the company, she was the Rockville-based firm’s only black manager. She alleges that previous black managers were fired and replaced.

She says her own firing came despite the fact that she never received a job performance grade of unsatisfactory. Before her July 16 termination, she was required to train the person who was to replace her. She also said that less than a week after she was fired, the replacement – who she says is a less-qualified white male – showed up at her home asking for assistance with a problem at work.

In addition, she alleges that the company did not pay its share of her health insurance premiums for the last six months of her employment. She also claims in filed court documents that though she managed two storage facilities, she was paid less than non-black managers in charge of only one facility.

Any Maryland resident who believes they have been discriminated against by an employer on the basis of race, gender, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, family status or marital status should speak with an experienced employment attorney.
